Ken, Ken go away

April 1, 2009 - 10:52 pm

Since I refuse to sign up for an account in order to post comments on the Reader’s website, I’ll deal with Blurt hack Ken Leighton’s latest here. Here’s what Ken wrote this week:

In other live-music news, the principal organizer of last year’s North by North Park music confab has settled on a new name following complaints by South by Southwest organizers that it was too similar to their annual Austin event.

Organizer Kevin Hellman says the new name will be the North Park Music Thing and that the event this year will expand from one day to three days, August 7–9.

Hellman, publisher of San Diego CityBeat, seemed to be at odds with CityBeat editor Kelly Davis, who suggested in a SD CityBeat blog that the issue was moot since the new name of the event had been changed to North to North Park. Davis blogged that this Reader writer was an “ignorant slut” for not knowing that the name had in fact been changed to North to North Park. Hellman said that Davis did not speak for the event and that the event was in fact run by the nonprofit San Diego Music Foundation and not by SD CityBeat, which is a sponsor of the event.

Dear Ken, first I’m not the editor, but thanks for the promotion. Second, I never claimed to speak for North 2/by/4/whatever-you-call-it North Park. Third, I wasn’t suggesting that the name was changed; I was stating a fact that was, at the time of my blog post, correct. Here’s one of Kevin’s e-mail signatures from February—when I wrote the blog post you refer to:

Kevin Hellman
Publisher, San Diego CityBeat
Director, San Diego Music Foundation
Coordinator, North 2 North Park

What’s that it says? “North 2 North Park”! Since you only communicate with people by e-mail, you should have known that. Has the name been changed since then? It has! Big news! Now, slither back under your rock, dude, and stop trying to generate controversy where there is none.

Update: Here’s Kevin’s version: “[Ken] asked for the new event name. I gave it to him. I told him that we were going to use “North to North Park” and recently changed to North Park Music Thing. He asked if it was a CityBeat produced event and I told him that it was a SD Music Foundation produced event, and that CB was an event sponsor. He asked if you were part of SDMF and I told him you worked at CB, and were not an SDMF board member.” End of story.

Ken Leighton needs to step away from the crack pipe, realize he works for a slimebag, and move to Philly and work at “CityPages.” It would be good for us all.

Ken is still up to his dirty tricks-he owns a bar in Oceanside called The Royal Dive-he continuously write bad reviews regarding other bands that do not play at his bar. He has also been known to call the police on neighboring bars and make false claims against the fan and musicians just to get the cops to shut the show down…it is terrible and we need to be able to stop this guy some how…why does he constantly feel the need to piss on other parades…what is his trip?
