All you need is love….

April 6, 2009 - 7:36 pm

Sunday evening, I attended the marriage of Patrick and April Chambers, a couple who, right now, live along Island Avenue, near 14th Street, in East Village (yes, they’re homeless). Someone said it was the first homeless wedding in 15 years, though most people were sure it was a first for San Diego, period. Here’s the new couple:

Gerry Limpic, an ordained minister and fried of David “The Water Man” Ross, presided over the ceremony, which included the couple’s handwritten vows. Here’s my favorite line from April’s: “Thank you for wanting and needing me like you do; you make me feel beautiful.” And from Patrick’s: “All my life I have searched for you…. I will be honored to spend the rest of my life with you.” There was a crowd of maybe 60 gathered, who slowly closed in on the couple as they said their final vows, in this sort-of huge group hug:

Patrick, a commercial fisherman, told me that they’d been friends for six years and together as a couple for one. He said he knew on their first date (to Mexico for breakfast), that April was it. The wedding is officially official—shortly after the ceremony, they signed the paperwork to send in to the county recorder.

I plan to check back in with the Chambers this week—there were dozens of people wanting to talk to them after the ceremony. For now, here are some more photos:

WHY is it that the door to misery is FREE to pass through, but the door OUT of misery has a huge toll? Who is going to fund the divorce? Good luck to these two fools who will soon discover how good life used to be.

I know these two bozos personally. How they managed to con David Ross out of the $50 cost for a marriage license is beyond my wildest imagination. After the wedding they relocated to the Loma Portal after Patrick was exposed as a registered sex offender. As for April, well lets just say she is well-known among homeless men in the Lower East Village. They now spend their time living out of a shopping cart parked besides a dumpster at the corner of Midway and Rosecrans, recycling metal for cigarette money. (Look, man! This is aluminium! It’s worth MONEY!) I thought it was most fitting that they were married outside San Diego Pet Supply at the corner of 15th and Island. That way, when they get divorced, they can go back inside to their separate cages.
