UCSD Law School?

April 22, 2009 - 9:50 am

In response to a question from San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith this morning at the City Council’s Rules Committee meeting, a representative from UCSD confirmed that there are ongoing “conversations” with California Western School of Law about some kind of partnership or purchase.

Goldsmith said he’d heard talk that the university was maybe going to buy a law school. That’s when the representative, whose name I haven’t caught (the meeting is ongoing) and was speaking to the committee about the economic benefits of UCSD, mentioned the talks between the two institutions. But she said she couldn’t say anything beyond that.

Update: The representative I mentioned was UCSD Vice Chancellor Debra Neuman, who just told me that, no, there’s no talk of purchase. She was very careful about characterizing the conversations, at first using the words “partnership” and “merger” but then backpedaling on “merger.” We left it at conversations about UCSD and Cal Western “working together in some way.”
