Grand Ole Party cancels shows. Breaking up?

June 26, 2009 - 3:04 pm

Grand Ole Party has cancelled both their San Diego gigs at The Casbah on July 11 and at Street Scene (the festival’s website no longer lists the band in the lineup) on Aug. 28. A UT Street post from Wednesday has the band all but broken up, citing a source at The Casbah who says that one of the band members told them that the band was through.

However, a very reliable source has told me that the band’s manager has insisted that the band has not broken up and has cancelled the shows so as to gear up for the record release.

This seems contradictory, however, since playing shows is how bands build momentum and buzz for a record release. And turning down not only a well-paying gig like Street Scene, but also a chance to play new material to potentially thousands of people, seems very strange.

The band has a MySpace headline that reads, “WE R NOT DEAD, WE R RECORDING,” but I believe that does not allude to the band’s current status as the headline has been up there for months and the band has already completed initial recording on what would be their sophomore album in Atlanta with producer Ben Allen.

In any case, it’d be a shame if they have, indeed, broken up. The band’s new material is fantastic, and Ben Allen is the same guy who was behind the boards for Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion, so I had/have very high expectations for the new record. I have tried to contact frontwoman Kristin Gundred and band manager Christina Dunkley but have not heard back. I plan on updating this post as more details are revealed so check back soon.

Update: Just received an email from GOP manager, Christina Dunkley who says that the information I received was correct and that the band is not breaking up. To quote, “They cancelled a couple of shows as we are gearing up for their record release.” More to come…

Update: A source close to the band who wishes to remain anonymous says the band will continue but with a different lineup than original three-piece of drummer/singer Kristin Gundred, guitarist John Paul Labno and bassist Micheal Krachnyak. However, they did not elaborate who exactly was leaving the band. In any case, it seems that the band is alive.

Ok I’m flipping out!! Anybody have any news on this? I will seriously lose it f they’re broken up. I will hang myself tonight if this is confirmed. I’ve been to every California show and they were played at my wedding. My wife does her hair exactly like the singer.

Well – Kristin signed to Sub Pop with her latest project Dum Dum Girls with a full length album to be released in 2010… so I assume she’s left GOP.

Umm… didn’t they move here from SF to make it big because people in SF already realized they sucked? I say, let ’em go back home.
