Is Camille Zombro the Emperor from Star Wars?

June 26, 2009 - 10:08 am

After reading today’s editorial in the Union-Tribune, I couldn’t help but think of the scene near the end of Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, especially considering the way the writer concluded the piece, a dire warning to all San Diegans about the nearly finished takeover of the school district by the “powerful” teachers union, led by Emperor—er, President Camille Zombro:

The union’s ambitious drive to commandeer the city schools is only beginning to gather steam. Next on the union’s list of demands is the highly controversial doctrine called “maintenance of standards” – a contract clause that would give the union a sweeping veto over almost every aspect of school governance. This glaring power grab is the grand prize of teachers union bargaining agreements. If the school board caves on this one, the union takeover of the San Diego Unified School District will be complete.

So, in the city schools version of Star Wars, the two-member school board minority is the rebel alliance, and “reform-minded” Superintendent Terry Grier is our hero, Luke Skywalker. Here, Emperor Zombro taunts Terry Skywalker:

The Emperor: Come, boy, see for yourself. From here, you will witness the final destruction of the Alliance and the end of your insignificant rebellion.

[Terry’s eyes go to his lightsabre]

The Emperor: You want this, don’t you? The hate is swelling in you now. Take your Jedi weapon. Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.

Terry: No.

The Emperor: It is unavoidable. It is your destiny.

How can we stop this Union from destroying our schools under the cloaked dagger of protectiing 180 teachers at the expense of the classroom. Do teachers HATE kids? What has this world come to?

What makes you think that protecting 180 teachers comes at the expense of our classrooms? It’s not an “either-or” choice. The community must stop believing the lies, and work to illuminate the dark corners of the Ed Center where excess still abounds.

I happen to know on good authority that Camille Zombro is, in fact, a HUGE fan of Star Wars. The force is strong in this one! She’s Yoda, not the Emperor!

If anyone bothered to just talk to her, they’d know she loves puppies, playing Scrabble, knitting, and cooking for her family and friends. And she loves teaching. She’s a great teacher who’s students respect and admire her and that’s why she was asked to step into a leadership role at her union.

Bring her a cafe mocha and she’ll tell you all about what’s really going on at SDUSD. She’s a lovely, funny, honest and straightforward person– and if you catch her on a good day, you might get some homemade food she likes to cook for everyone at the office!
