Got a very happy and pleasant phone call from former Grand Ole Party guitarist John Paul Labno today, who informed me that while G.O.P. has, indeed, broken up, he has already started a new band called The Hot Moon. Featuring members of Black Heart Procession (Jason Hooper) and Mr. Tube and The Flying Objects (Jovi Butts and Brad Lee–John Paul also plays in Mr. Tube from time to time), Labno is playing guitar and saxophone in the band while vocal and keyboard duties come courtesy of Sasha Pfau. Labno says that the band is still in it’s infancy, but they have some demos up and it sounds like their going for a retro R&B sound a la Dusty Springfield and Sharon Jones. They’ll be playing their first show on September 19 at Walk the Walk’s Presents “Sight & Sound” art event in North Park, but then will take a two-month break while Jovi and Jason are out of town. He expects their next show after September probably won’t come until late January.
