San Diego Shows–Thursday, Dec. 17

December 17, 2009 - 8:14 am

PLAN A: El Ten Eleven @ Bar Pink: If you dig Ratatat or Hella, you owe it to yourself to check out this L.A. instrumental duo (above). And when I say “instrumental,” I mean a double-necked guitar and a shitload of drums and pedals making so much damn cool electro-rock noise that you don’t know whether you wanna dance or bang your head (check out the video below). PLAN B: Zero 7, Phantogram @ House of Blues: Never was a huge fan of electro-popsters Zero 7, but their new album is definitely a darker departure from their previous material. But what puts this show over the top is the strength of the performance I saw from Phantogram when they played The Casbah last October. The co-ed N.Y. duo makes some sweet trip-hop love that recently got them signed to taste-making label Barsuk Records. I ain’t promising it’s gonna be as great as the video below (especially since it’s at the House of Blues), but you should definitely bring someone to dance with. BACKUP PLAN: The White Buffalo, Blackout Party, Rachael Cantu @ The Casbah.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

“Happy Houred” @ El Dorado: Happy Houred is an iPhone app that directs you to the best early-evening drink deals in town. To celebrate the San Diego launch, El-D will have free DonQ rum drinks as well as complimentary grub from Alchemy from 6 to 8 p.m. And stick around afterward for “All Things Rad Pt. Deux” with DJs Iron Mike and others spinning just about everything but Top-40 while makeup artist/fashionista Morgan Gates gives free makeovers for the ladies.

North Park Craft Mafia @ U-31: If you missed North Park Craft Mafia’s Holiday Hit List event, come to this event from 5 to 9 p.m. where San Diego’s craftiest will be on hand to help last minute shoppers get their homemade gifts.
