San Diego Shows–Monday, Dec. 28

December 28, 2009 - 8:05 am

PLAN A: The Old In Out, Rats Eyes, Northern Towns, A-B @ The Casbah. Another solid local lineup of bands of the more hardcore persuasion. Rats Eyes plays ‘80s-style in the vein of Black Flag and Circle Jerks, while Northern Towns (above) bring an element of Brit-punk to their aggressive sing-alongs. I hope the latter plays their shit-kicking cover of Leonard Cohen’s “The Partisan.” CityBeat’s Jim Ruland has written about both bands. You can check that out here and herePLAN B: Contend, Abandon, Distressed @ Che Café. Speaking of the hard stuff, this might be the place to be if you like drawing Xs on your hands. Contend is some radically political vegan hardcore from Reno with a female lead singer who can scream with the best of the boys. It’s pretty basic, and the riffs border on metal, but I got pretty scared after listening to “Absolution.”

“Snow Day” @ New Children’s Museum. San Diego kids. They’re spoiled. They’ll never know the character-building joy of shoveling snow or scraping ice off Dad’s windshield. But they can enjoy the snow without the chores for one day only at the New Children’s Museum’s Snow Day. From 2 to 4 p.m., it’ll be snowing in the Museum Park (200 West Island Drive, Downtown) with a little help from modern technology usually reserved for the ski slopes. Kids can make snowmen, angels and, if they’re lucky, that bully from school will be there, and they can pop him in the face with a wicked snowball. And don’t forget that the museum is still holding its canned-food drive. Bring in five cans and receive $5 off a museum membership.

The Styletones @ Bar Pink.

The Blackout Party @ Riviera Supper Club.

Lady Dottie and The Diamonds @ U-31.

“Musical Pursuit” @ Whistle Stop.
