Ivy Hotel to become Andaz

January 11, 2010 - 12:58 pm

Hyatt Hotels sent out a press release today announcing plans to assume management of The Ivy, a “boutique” hotel located Downtown at Sixth Avenue and F Street. With the management change comes a new name: “Andaz.” (Andaz is Hyatt’s chain of small hotels, or, as they put it:

Each Andaz is a kaleidoscope of local culture. You will see it in the art on the walls and the flowers in our vases. You will taste it in our food and drinks. Every detail and every moment are an opportunity to enjoy it. It will make it a delight to turn a corner and explore. It will stimulate and inspire you. Because you are not simply visiting our hotel locations, you are experiencing them authentically and intimately.

Um. OK.

Longtime CityBeat readers will remember that The Ivy used to be the Maryland Hotel, an SRO built in 1914 that provided housing-of-last-resort to folks on disability and seniors on fixed incomes. We first reported on the eviction of those tenants on Dec. 31, 2002, and followed up later with a long piece, “Portrait of an Eviction.” (Still curious what happened to The Ivy’s stated plans to feature acrobats and fire-breathers in its ground-floor nightclub.)

In a June article about the W Hotel’s financial problems, voiceofsandiego.org reporter Kelly Bennett quoted Ivy owner Michael Kelly:

It’s a really tough time in the industry,” he said.

Room rates are down, revenues are down, but Ivy’s restaurants and bar revenues are helping to support it, Kelly said.

So they throw all these people out, refurbish the hotel, can’t make it work, and bring in the schlock-hotel chain to run it….one dumbass move after the other!

With Kelly still managing it, it will still suck. That is what was always wrong with the place from the get go.

they’ve always had an attitude at that establishment. i the one occasion i went there, i witnessed a musician who was actually performing at the hotel that night get turned away from the front door over concerns about his/her outfit. Not a recipe for long term success no matter how many d bags you can pull on a friday night.

Saw coverage on local news of the Ivy-to-Andaz transition. Entire video clip consisted of half-naked gyrating drunken-looking girls/boys. Money is in sex and alcohol, yep. It really wasn’t very appealing.
