San Diego Shows–Monday, Jan. 11

January 11, 2010 - 9:39 am

PLAN A: Lymbyc Systym, Helios, Drew Andrews & The Spectral Cities @ Che Café. With the exception of local Drew Andrews, there won’t be many vocal mics set up for this show. Fans of The Album Leaf surely already know Brooklyn instrumental duo Lymbyc Systym (above), but it’s Helios’ minimalist electro ballads that gets me the most excited. PLAN B: Alberta Cross, Hacienda @ The Casbah. Alberta Cross just released a decent album of grandiose alterna-rock, but it’s the openers you might want to follow in 2010. The San Antonians have already opened for Dr. Dog and The Black Keys and made a fan in the latter’s frontman, Dan Auerbach, who asked the blues-pop band to back him up on his solo tour.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Brewery de Koningshoeven lecture and tasting @ Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. If you’re like CityBeat columnist Edwin Decker—in other words, a drinker of bubbly piss beer and hater of finely crafted ales—you shouldn’t attend this event. La Trappe beers are a line of traditional Dutch ales with high alcohol content produced at monasteries since 1884. Yes, with Brewery de Koningshoeven, we’re talking beer from the abbey with the blessing of Trappist Monks, which is way better than formerly regional beer produced by global mega-corporations (ahem, AB-Inbev). At 6 p.m., beer aficionados can meet Koningshoeven head brewer Lodewijk Swinkels from the Netherlands to learn about the La Trappe libations (and sip them from glass goblets).

The Tightenups @ Ruby Room.

Golden Birthday @ Soda Bar.

Mexican Switchblade @ Tin Can Ale House.

The Styletones @ Bar Pink.

Blackout Party @ Riviera Supper Club.

Lady Dottie & The Diamonds @ U-31.

Nice, creative way to work in an Ed Decker jab there, Seth. I think that makes us even.

    Anyway…

LOVERS OF BUBBLY PISS BEER UNITE!
