San Diego Shows–Thursday, Jan. 14

January 14, 2010 - 8:29 am

PLAN A: Sunday Times, Old Man, Cub and Pony @ Tin Can Ale House. Not exactly punk, not exactly post-punk and certainly not new wave (although you can certainly dance to it), local trio Sunday Times are steadily growing a following for their vigorous shows. And judging by the demos on their MySpace, co-ed bedroom duo Cub and Pony should be opening for Christmas Island and Heavy Hawaii soon enough. PLAN B: Dave Hillyard and the Rock Steady 7, See Spot, The Lifters @ The Casbah. Apparently it’s reggae and ska night in San Diego (The Aggrolites and State Radio are playing the House of Blues tonight as well), but saxophonist and former Slacker Dave Hillyard, accompanied by his merry band of sharp-dressed players, are the real deal. BACKUP PLAN: Jackie Greene, Truth and Salvage Co @Belly Up.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

“Classic Mexican Cinema” @ MOPA. The Museum of Photographic Arts kicks off a yearlong series celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican revolution.

Carol Sklenicka @ Book Works. Carver—who died from lung cancer in 1988 at age 50—could pack a world into a few words. His life, however, was marked by alcoholism and domestic problems—another example of the extent to which dysfunction fuels genius (or is it the other way around?). Author Carol Sklenicka explores Carver’s demons and their impact on his writing in Raymond Carver: A Writer’s Life, named one of The New York Times’ top 10 books of 2009. Sklenicka will discuss her book, and performance-artist Lisa Fugard will do a short reading from Carver’s work at the Book Works in the Flower Hill Mall in Del Mar.

Mark E Quark’s Sleeze Pleeze @ El Dorado.

State Radio with The Aggrolites @ House of Blues.

Black Resume, I-45 , H.E.L.P., Eno, Unexpected, Gordo @ Brick By Brick.

Rob Deez & Friends @ Java Joe’s @ Cafe Libertalia.

Buddy Akai, Vega, Salter & Diaz @ Voyeur.

Abandon the Raft @ Soda Bar.

Behind the Wagon, Nautical Disaster @ Ruby Room.

Zosia, Distilled Spirits, Ellamae @ Beauty Bar.
