San Diego Shows–Monday, Jan. 18

January 18, 2010 - 8:45 am

PLAN A: San Francisco Water Cooler @ Soda Bar. Pretty much as close as you’ll get to a lo-fi jam band, this Fiddletown, Calif., trio was formed from the ashes of San Francisco freaks Residual Echoes. They made a lot of lovely noise on their 2008 debut, and I hope their new material is just as rampant. PLAN B: Hockey, Asa Ransom, DJ Skullcrusher @ The Casbah. I can totally see Hockey being shunned in Portland’s hipsterati music scene. They’re way too produced and way too catchy (think The Strokes meets MGMT) for anyone up there to actually admit to liking. And definitely catch Asa Ransom. Despite a significantly sparser crowd than the headliner, they still stole the show when they opened for Bobby Fantasy at the Ruby Room a few months ago. Addendum: Just got word that this show is sold out so get on Craigslist. BACKUP PLAN: Musical Charis @ Ruby Room.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Shark Attack (DJ set) @ Live Wire.

Chuck Fenda, Pato Banton, Ugandan Children’s Choir @ World Beat Center. MLK Day celebration. Starts at 11 a.m.

Pulp Fiction @ Birch North Park Theatre.

Blackout Party @ Riviera Supper Club.

Putrid Feedback, Abject, Nuclear Tomorrow, Revenge CL @ Radio Room.

Lady Dottie and The Diamonds @ U-31.

The Styletones @ Bar Pink.
