San Diego Shows–Wednesday, Jan. 20

January 20, 2010 - 7:46 am

PLAN A: HaBanot Nechama @ The Loft. In case you missed our feature in last week’s issue, the three lovely ladies in Habanot Nechama are huge in their home country of Israel for their gorgeous folk strumming and perfect harmonies. And while they have songs in English, it’s the Hebrew ballads that make me shout yesh! PLAN B: Christmas Island, Beaters, Heavy Hawaii, Nude Boy @ The Casbah. The two headliners are probably the biggest local stars in the indie blogosphere, but I’m definitely excited to see newcomers Nude Boy, who, unlike Heavy Hawaii, seem to understand that just because you’re cool and lo-fi or whatever doesn’t mean you can’t be catchy.BACKUP PLAN: Gilbert Castellanos Quartet @ Bar Pink.

Lux @ Night at Lux Art Institute. Sure, the 3-D panoramas of Avatar were monumental, but, ultimately, they’re mere finger-paintings compared with the landscapes of painter Iva Gueorguieva. See, that’s ironic because the L.A.-based Bulgarian painter uses her hands to fill the canvas. Her abstract paintings of dining rooms and musicians are as expansive as enchanted jungles and twisted cityscapes; they’re living, slithering epics, endless in perspective, and they didn’t cost $200 million to produce. Gueorguieva is currently an artist-in-residence at Lux Art Institute, with an exhibit running through March 17. Art fans can meet the artist during Lux@Night from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is 21 and older; a $5 donation is suggested.

The Howls, RNRS, Tin Can Notes, Longstay @ Beauty Bar.

Napolean Complex, Michael Logen @ Soda Bar.

DJ Shoeshine @ Tin Can Ale House.

Dick Dale, Forever Came Calling, The Heavy Guilt @ Belly Up.

El Monte Slim @ Riviera Supper Club.

The Brothers Cooley, Elliot Szabo @ Ruby Room.

Welcome to Nothing, I Am the Heart Attack @ Dreamstreet Live. It’s only in here because the headliner is my brother’s band. They’re actually pretty sucky, but there’s hope.
