San Diego Shows–Monday, Jan. 25

January 25, 2010 - 8:42 am

PLAN A: Ears, Nose and Throat @ Sushi. They aren’t a traveling group of otolaryngologists. Nope, it’s a bastard hellspawn birthed out of noise-rock, free jazz and electro that makes up for its lack of aural tact with sheer inventiveness. A trio of cutting-edge musicians playing what its members call “new-age space music” using things like amplified rubber bands and signal processors. The musicians are M.C. Schmidt (half of electro duo Matmos), Half Japanese’s Jason Willett and Max Eilbacher of Baltimore drum-noise outfit Teeth Mountain. If you show up right at 8 p.m., you can check out opener J. Lesser, a local sound manipulator who earned his chops playing in Bjork’s band. $15, $10 for studentsBACKUP PLAN: The Fascination, Vinyl Film, Save Amos @ Ruby Room.

Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company @ The Loft. Ever wonder what Amy Poehler or Horatio Sanz did before they were hamming it up on SNL? What about Ed Helms before he was a Daily Show correspondent and, later, Stu from The Hangover? These three have one thing in common: the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company. Yes, they’ve moved on, but the brigade still boasts a stable of improv comedians from New York and Los Angeles. And if you want to try to be funny, too, you can take their 90-minute improv workshop before the show. Either way, you’ll be laughing.

Reservoir Dogs @ Birch North Park Theatre.

Myriad Trio @ Conrad Prebys Concert Hall.

Jemina Pearl, Mermaid, The Littlest Viking @ The Casbah.

Medavog Couture Fashion Show @ Soda Bar.

Blackout Party @ Riviera Supper Club.

Lady Dottie and The Diamonds, DJ Jason Weedon @ U-31.
