San Diego Shows–Wednesday, Feb. 10

February 10, 2010 - 9:49 am

PLAN A: St. Vincent, Wildbirds & Peacedrums @ Belly Up. To be honest, I liked St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark, above) a lot more when she was called Kate Bush, but her one-woman indie-rock gets so under the skin that I’m coming around to understand the accolades. And speaking of skin, Wildbirds & Peacedrums’ Mariam Wallentin has a haunting voice that makes mine crawl. Don’t be fooled by the hippie name; this is some eerie two-person folk that had me wide-eyed and bewildered when their album came out last year. PLAN B: Meshell Ndegeocello @ Anthology. She’s going on 20 years’ worth of performing, and, unlike Sinead, she keeps going and has yet to grow her hair out, so you know she’s in it for real. Her 1999 album, Bitter, the best tracks from which she’ll play at this show, is an understated masterpiece, appreciated only by the unhip and those nursing broken hearts.BACKUP PLAN: Problem with Dragons, Northern Towns, bantamfeather @ Soda Bar.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

The Guggenheim Grotto @ Y1 Studios.

Alec Ounsworth, The Vision of a Dying World @ The Casbah.

The Makepeace Brothers, Skelpin, Stealing Love Jones, Lindsay White @ U-31.

Gilbert Castellanos @ Super El Camino.

Dum Dum Girls DJ Night @ Tin Can Ale House.

Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel @ Bar Pink.

Ragdoll City, Deadline To Madison @ Radio Room.

Schmaltz, Fractophone, Death by Volcano, Ox Eyes @ The Beauty Bar.
