San Diego Shows–Tuesday, Feb. 23
PLAN A: Laura Meyer, Jennifer Guerra, Karla Mi Lugo, The Schitzophonics @ Soda Bar. In case you missed her at Ruby Room or Java Jones, New York chanteuse Laura Meyer (above) is playing her third and final San Diego show tonight. But what really puts this show over the top is local Karla Mi Lugo. Holy crap, where did this woman come from? Sporting ukuleles, accordions and a Billie Holiday (in her drugged-out glory) voice, I can’t wait to see her live. BACKUP PLAN: Author & Punisher, Riverberb, Fortress of Amplitude @ The Casbah. Ever hear industrial doom-metal made by one guy and a bunch of homemade instruments with nary a guitar in sight? Well, I have, and it needs to be seen to be believed. This is an album release show for the one-man project and be sure to check out the excellent feature by Kelly Davis to get an idea of some of the crazy instruments used to make such a sound.
OTHER COOL STUFF:
“Darwkwave Garden” @ Kadan Club. Before the neighborhood was overrun with P.B. bros and hos making a ruckus, North Park had but one kick-ass, not-to-miss night: “Club Sabbat” at Shooterz, where DJs like Robin Roth (who now hosts nights like “Dominion” at Satin Lounge and “Ascension” at Kava Lounge) made wearing all black for one night pretty, damn cool. My prediction for next big thing? The return of goth and industrial nights. Radio Room has also started their own on sporadic Saturday nights.
Tarrus Riley, Sherieta Lewis, Stranger, DJ Carlos Culture @ Belly Up.
Golden Red, Patrick Norton Band, Tim Graves @ Tin Can Ale House.
Nena Anderson @ Riviera Supper Club.
Kavana, John Wayne Gacy Daycare, Toreback, Race Against Space @ Radio Room.
“Too Cool For Karaoke” @ Ruby Room.
“Friends Chill” game night @ Whistle Stop.
