San Diego Shows–Thursday, March 4
PLAN A: The Clientele, The Wooden Birds @ The Casbah. Papa John Phillips would have really loved The Clientele’s lush psych-pop with a side of mope. If you think The Moody Blues and Lee Hazlewood are vastly underrated, then you’re not alone. And do catch The Wooden Birds, an Austin folk outfit that includes alumni from American Analog Set, Broken Social Scene and Ola Podrida. PLAN B: Kevin Martin, Gayle Skidmore, Jackson Price @ Tin Can Ale House. Martin is probably better known for whooping it up with power-poppers Get Back Loretta, but, luckily, he’s been hoarding some folk and alt-country gems for himself. And I recently found out that local chanteuse Gayle Skidmore plays a mean banjo, so consider me smitten. BACKUP PLAN: Nervous Wreckords @ Bar Pink.
OTHER COOL STUFF:
Bianca Paras, Cameron Rafati, Dawn Mitschele @ Lestat’s. Not a huge fan of the two ladies on the bill, but I think I listened to Rafati’s “Mausoleum” on a loop last week. A tango song for the Rufus Wainwright fans in the house.
Hyena, Vega, Salter & Diaz @ Voyeur.
Trevor Davis, Dr Seahorse, Pawnshop Kings @ Anthology.
Rob Deez, Lisa Olson @ Java Joe’s at Cafe Libertalia.
“Generations Party” w/ DJ Artistic, Cros 1 @ U-31.
“Sleeze Pleeze” w/ Mark E Quark @ El Dorado.
God Module, To Mega Therion @ Radio Room.
Rebelution with Soja and Zion-1 @ House of Blues.
horeline Rootz, Project Out of Bounds @ Belly Up.
Preservation Hall Jazz Band @ Birch North Park Theatre.
