San Diego Shows–Monday, March 8

March 8, 2010 - 7:46 am

PLAN A: Grand Tarantula, Finn Riggins, Boy Eats Drum Machine @ Soda Bar. Judging by their video on MySpace, alt-rockers Grand Tarantula look to be a hot, new local band to watch. And with a clever mix of electro-pop and heavy guitars, it’s easy to see why fellow Idahoans Built to Spill took Finn Riggins (above) out on the road last year. PLAN B: Laura Veirs and the Hall of Flames, Old Believers, Cataldo @ The Casbah. Probably best known as the librarian-looking chick who wrote that “Galaxies” song everyone was salivating over in 2005, Veirs recently returned with the decidedly more grounded, July Flame. Orchestral without being bombastic, folky without being folksy, she’s a unique talent in the already-oversaturated singer-songwriter genre. BACKUP PLAN: Ox Eyes, Elephant @ Ruby Room.

Hanoch Piven @ The Loft at UCSD. Here’s how Israeli magazine illustrator Hanoch Piven creates a portrait of President Barack Obama: two Statue of Liberty right arms for eyebrows, horizontally flipped flag lapel pins for eyes, a genie’s magic lamp for a nose and, if we’re not mistaken, shiny white squares of nicotine gum for teeth. And you know what? It looks just like him. UCSD’s ArtPower! is “extremely excited” that Piven will be at the opening of his show, Piven World, at The Loft at UCSD (second floor of Price Center East). The free event starts at 4 p.m. and is sponsored by the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles.

Beautiful Losers @ Central Library, Downtown. Not a Leonard Cohen doc,  but rather about the young DIY artists from the ’90s, like Shepard Fairey, Spike Jonze and Harmony Korine, whose work had an intense impact on the art community and pop culture in general.

Jarrod Gorbel @ The Loft at UCSD. The man behind the emo-tastic The Honorary Title strips his sound down and attempts atmospheric alt-country. Have to say, kinda dig it.

The Styletones @ Bar Pink.

Lady Dottie & The Diamonds @ U-31.

The Blackout Party @ Riviera Supper Club.

“Teenage Wasteland” w/DJs Lord Hammer, Muchacho, D-Hey @ Tin Can ALe House.

Salt: Wake, Gotuary, Chainsaw Carnage, Senseless Dimetia @ Radio Room.
