San Diego Shows–Thursday, Mar. 11

March 11, 2010 - 7:40 am

PLAN A: Beaters, Maren Parusel, Wirepony, Jenn Grinels @ Belly Up. If you enjoy what you’ve read so far in our local music issue, why not come to the party we’re throwing to celebrate the release? Four great local acts are playing, including the one for whom we predict the biggest things. Plus, I’ll be there, so if you don’t like what I said about your band in the Great Demo Review, feel free to swing by and tell me. And you’ll help raise money for the San Diego Music Foundation). PLAN B: Tape Deck Mountain, Writer, Primitive Noyes @ Tin Can Ale House. Another great local showcase. Indie-rockers Tape Deck Mountain are getting major blog love (not so much from Pitchfork), and Primitive Noyes was, by far, my favorite demo this year. BACKUP PLAN: Lovvers, Abe Vigoda @ Bar Pink.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Laminin @ Woodbury School of Architecture. The WSA welcomes artist Christian Tedeschi as part of its series of exhibitions featuring work by local artists and designers.

“Foovies” @ The Loft at UCSD. Say the word “estomago” and take a guess at what it means. If you guessed that thing in your gut that holds food, you’re right! Estômago is also a 2007 Brazilian / Italian film about a prisoner who works his way up the prison power-ladder through his unique cooking skills. But where’d he get them? And how’d he land in prison? That’s what the film’s really about. Part of ArtPower’s Foovies series, the screening of Estômago will be preceded by a menu that includes dishes like spaghetti puttanesca, a roasted banana and caramel bread pudding for dessert and, to drink, Palma Louca Lager. Enjoy your meal to the tunes of the talented Scott Paulson. Dinner begins at 7:30 p.m., film at 8 p.m. $26.

Gustavo Arellano @ Latte Mi Corazon. The O.C. Weekly reporter and author of the syndicated “Ask a Mexican” column will take questions, sign book and talk about why Minuteman Jeff Schwilk is his favorite San Diegan.

Transfer, The Silent Comedy, Black Hondo, Agent Ribbons (Sold out) @ The Casbah.

Brandi Carlile, Gill Landry @ House of Blues.

Harvard Bass, Vega, Salter & Diaz @ Voyeur.

Trashcan Fires @ Whistle Stop.

“All Things Rad” w/ Mimi & Red Fashion Show @ El Dorado

The Pack A.D. @ Soda Bar.

“Generations Party” w/DJ Artistic & Cros 1 @ U-31.

Nautical Disaster, China Clippers, Animal Ancestors, Race Against Space @ Radio Room.

Knockout Bell, Vinyl Film, Sour Soul @ Ruby Room.

Rob Deez @ Java Joe’s at Cafe Libertalia.

Veronica May @ Encinitas Library.
