Carl DeMaio tweets about candidate’s comments on gay politicans.

March 12, 2010 - 4:06 pm

Back in early February, City Councilmember Carl DeMaio—a gay Republican—climbed the stage at the San Diego County Republican Party’s monthly gathering to introduce Lorie Zapf, the party’s endorsed candidate to replace Democrat Donna Frye.

Before running this week’s story on anti-gay comments Zapf made in 2006—including an assertion that she opposes gays serving in public office—we asked DeMaio about that introduction. We did not mention the anti-gay e-mails to DeMaio.

Via a direct message on Twitter, DeMaio told CityBeat that County GOP Chair Tony Krvaric “wanted me to talk city politics and why it is important to be active in them and then intro lori. not endorsing yet.”

Today, DeMaio was taking questions from constituents, this time publicly through Twitter (@carldemaio). So, we (and @gregelevin) asked him to respond to the story. DeMaio saved his response until the end, telling us early on:

“RE Lori Zapf I will be answering this as my last question. Wouldn’t want you guys to leave the Twitter Forum early. :-)”

So, we waited and waited and waited. Then, finally, DeMaio tweeted:

RE Zapf Lorie strongly supported me and others like bonnie Dumanis. She has been a strong supporter of fiscal reform

RE ZAPF I was very surprised to read the stories on Lorie’s emails. It does not seem like her at all.

RE ZAPF needless to say, I am very disappointed that she expressed those views

RE ZAPF She has called me and apologized. I do believe her apology is sincere and that she does not subscribe to discriminatory views

RE ZAPF I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but hold her accountable.

CityBeat asked whether he endorsed Zapf. He signed off without providing an answer.

well here’s the deal; carl very well knows these were lorie’s views, but skipping that for the moment, we ALL have heard her spew these things, so now he gets to live in fear when/if he endorses her how many other emails etc will come out of the woodwork…….
bring it on carl. bring it on.
