San Diego Shows–Tuesday, March 23

March 23, 2010 - 7:06 am

PLAN A: Cymbals Eat Guitars, Bear in Heaven, Freelance Whales @ The Casbah. Enough about Bear in Heaven’s inexplicable sound. In fact, this lineup should be called the “What’s Hot in Brooklyn Tour” and all are worth a feature. Freelance Whales play lovely, almost emo-tastic pop that should please fans of Sufjan Stevens and Postal Service. And Cymbals Eat Guitars (above) are already live-show legends, playing propulsive indie-rock that’s being compared with Built to Spill and Modest Mouse. PLAN B: Kerretta, Kata @ Soda Bar. CityBeat columnist and overall encyclopedia de musica Todd Kroviak has hipped me to a lot of great music coming out of Australia and New Zealand, and the latter is well represented by these instrumental, self-described “dark-rockers,” who sound like Explosions in the Sky’s goth cousin. If you miss them tonight, then you get a second chance on Wednesday, March 24, when they play Bar Pink. BACKUP PLAN: Boomsnake, Y La Bamba, Wampire, White Fang @ Che Café.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Beer for Books @ Toronado. Wait, you mean we can help promote reading by drinking beer? Sign us up. Right now. From 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Toronado (4026 30th St. in North Park) will host Beer For Books, where $1 from every tasty brew purchased will go toward buying books for children. Behind B4B is the San Diego chapter of Room to Read, a nonprofit whose mission is to make sure children living in developing countries are literate and receiving quality education, no matter their gender. So there you have it: Buy a beer and you buy a kid a book. It’s win / win.

Storytelling @ San Diego Museum of Art. The Art of Elan’s season final concert features music “that seeks to tell stories, both with and without the use of words.” The concert is followed by Encore at the Prado, where the audience can join the musicians for food, drinks and conversation.

Judy Collins @ Acoustic Music San Diego.

Sanford Wolcott @ Bar Basic. An art show featuring Wolcott’s work and featuring DJ Messenger. He was named “best emerging artist” at the 2009 Gaslamp Art Showcase.

Guns Fever, Chango Rey & His Broken Heart Beat, DJs Rob Moran, Dan Sant @ Tin Can Ale House.

“Too Cool For Karaoke” @ Ruby Room.
