San Diego Shows–Wednesday, March 24

March 24, 2010 - 6:59 am

PLAN A: Swim Party, Tartufi, Writer @ Che Café. Locals Swim Party are great, and Writer’s new songs sound promising, but it’s pop experimentalists Tartufi (above) who put this show over the top. The San Francisco duo’s ’06 album Us Upon Buildings Upon Us is an understated highlight from that year, and their new EP—one 26-minute song—has been on a loop on my iPod. Fantastic from beginning to end. PLAN B: Tobacco, The Hood Internet, Nice Nice @ The Casbah. Pretty close to a Plan A, if only on the strength of the openers. Sure, Tobacco’s Beck-ish electro and The Hood Internet’s DJ mash-ups are swell, but the advance copy of Nice Nice’s major-label debut has me excited to see them the most. It’s an epic pastiche of electronic layering and heavy post-rock that’ll have them headlining soon enough. PLAN C: Pierced Arrows, Lullabye Arkestra, Kerretta @ Bar Pink. The headliner is the new project from Dead Moon founders Fred and Toody Cole and the new one ain’t that much different from the legendary Northwest garage-rock band. Sure am glad I got to see that band while they were still together. BACKUP PLAN: Narrows, Dead Ghosts @ Radio Room.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Latent Print Party @ Whistle Stop. This party hosted by the online art mag features live music from The Greg Gibson Band and Brenda Xu, live readings by Tria Andrews, Liz Huerta and Joseph Voth and the premiere of Tape Deck Mountain’s and Rodney Hubbard’s music videos.

Hank III, Assjack, Kyle Turley @ 4th & B.

Football Under Cover @ Central Library, Downtown. Documentary about a match between German and Iranian soccer teams that took place in Teheran in 2006. What’s remarkable is that both of these are women’s teams, and it marked the first time the Iranian women had ever played another squad.

Owl Eyes, Watch It Sparkle, Family Portrait, Young Prisms @ Soda Bar.

The Paddle Boat, Man/Miracle, Chairs Missing @ Tin Can Ale House.

Circa Now, Shaimus @ U-31.

My Life in Black and White @ Ruby Room.

Ellamae, The Heavy Guilt, Citizen Band, Might Tiger, Love Like Fire @ Beauty Bar.

“United Nations of Comedy 2” w/Alda Rodriguez, Mal Hall, Byron Bowers, Kevin Shea @ Belly Up.

Kreator, Kataklysm, Lazarus A.D. @ House of Blues.
