Everything must go. Citizen Video closing
Sad news. Just got word tonight that Citizen Video, the indie DVD store in South Park, is closing its doors. There’s really not much that’s good about this. Say what you want about tough economic times and changing technologies pushing the standard DVD by the wayside. What’s really going on here is that a very cool store and community that owner Holly Jones founded is going away, as well as the regular film screenings that Jones hosted at the Whistle Stop and other venues around town. And it’s tragic to see any local business, especially a female-owned one, go under.
The entire stock of Citizen DVDs are currently for sale, although it looked as though the crowd at Saturday night’s South Park Walkabout was making a decent dent in the inventory. Someone in the bar across the street showed me her new copy of Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master, and I myself was eying copies of Logan’s Run and Ralph Bakshi’s Fritz the Cat, but the lines were long and I had to be elsewhere. The long lines are good for Jones, whom I spoke with briefly, and who I’ve enjoyed discussing films with over the last few years. I think she’s proud of the run she had at Citizen (she should be), but it’s got to be very hard to say goodbye to the store. If you can, swing by and bulk up your own DVD collection. The money is absolutely going to a good cause.
