San Diego Shows–Friday, April 2

April 2, 2010 - 7:20 am

PLAN A: Illuminauts, The Paddle Boat @ Whistle Stop. Despite losing a member last year, the local DJ and electro duo Illuminauts continue to make trippy musical collages that makes listeners close their eyes and nod their heads along with the bass. This show also marks the release of their first 7-inch record, which, appropriately enough, was pressed on glow-in-the-dark vinyl. PLAN B: The Silent Comedy, Doll & The Kicks, Links @ The Casbah. Roots-pop outfit The Silent Comedy have a live show that makes them one of the few local bands that can sell out the Casbah, but it’s Britain-based quartet Doll & The Kicks who’ll likely have people exhausted from dancing come Saturday morning. Propulsive pop-rock à la The Pretenders and Yeah Yeah Yeahs that was catchy enough for Morrissey to cherry pick them to open for him last year. BACKUP PLAN: Hyena @ El Dorado.

Haiti / Chile Relief Art Show @ Edgeware Gallery. CNN may have pulled its crews from Haiti and Chile, but the recovery is still far from complete. With homelands on their minds, Haitian artist and musician Jean Paul and Chilean artist Guillermo Bert are displaying their works—along with almost a dozen local artists—at Edgeware Gallery’s Haiti / Chile Relief Art Show. Paul’s a painter of colorful and musical figures, while Bert combines the symbols of his heritage with contemporary commercial iconography. The gallery is also opening up its “Beatles Room,” a collection of Fab Four artifacts, to help raise money. The show’s opening reception, which includes live music from Paul, is from 5 to 9 p.m.

Lights On, The Death Eaters, The Franks @ Soda Bar.

Cover Me Badd’s .38 Specials Education, High Tide, S.D. School of Rock @ Queen Bee’s. The tribute-band collective Cover Me Badd, led by Adam Gimbel, will play a benefit show called .38 Specials Education on Friday, April 2, at Queen Bee’s to benefit the new music-education charity My Musical Muse. CMB will play the debut album by ska / reggae legends The Specials in its entirety. Reggae outfit High Tide and the San Diego School of Rock’s house band Aaaaaaaand will also perform.

Trash Axis, Eskera, Divergent, Nuclear Tomorrow @ Che Café. Benefit for Partners In Health’s Haiti Relief.

207 and Float 1 Year Anniversary @ Hard Rock Hotel. Will likely be packed to the brim with über-douches, but I might go just to check out Busta Rhymes, because last time they had a rapper play (Fat Joe), it got pretty krunk.

Christmas Island, Rat City Riot @ Tower Bar.

“Feel The Noise Presents a Daft Punk Tribute” w/Ron DMC, Nathan Black, Mike Delgado, Gabe Vega, Pleasure Victim @ U-31.

The Shape of Future Frames, DJ Steven Suiter @ Wit’s End.

A Scribe Amidst The Lions, Day of Anomie, Satanic Puppeteer Orchestra @ Radio Room.

Motion to Server, Scales, FKENAL @ Tin Can Ale House.

Trent Cantrelle, Tara Brooks @ Voyeur.

DJ Artistic @ Bar Pink.

Daryl Shawn, Brenda Xu, Seaholm Mackintosh @ Mueller College.

Sun God Festival 2010 DJ Battle Dance Party @ The Loft at UCSD.

Echo Revolution, Secret Apollo, Gravitorium @ Beauty Bar.

Off With Their Heads, Tiltwheel, Sunnyside @ Ken Club.

DJ Dan, Turbo Teen, Dskotek @ House of Blues.

Seth, now that you have a girlfriend, what I want to know is, how can I trust you to advise me on which bands I need to see when you can’t be trusted to get through your life without having a girlfriend to destroy it? Do you see my problem?
