San Diego Shows–Friday, April 9

April 9, 2010 - 6:06 am

PLAN A: Blowoff @ The Casbah. You think the big, hairy bears that show up for this night (see the feature by Justin Roberts from this week’s issue) will accept a Scene Wolf into their fold? PLAN B: Cattle Decapitation, Phobia, Warkrusher, Dead Ghosts @ Ruby Room. Undoubtedly the scariest sounding death-metal band in San Diego, if not in the country, Cattle Decapitation are actually vehement animal-rights advocates and vegans (check out how they question the use of animals-as-fertilizer in the video below). Makes sense, because frontman Travis Ryan sounds like a rabid bear in heat. There I go again with the bear references. BACKUP PLAN: Colin Hay @ Anthology.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Divergence @ SDSU Downtown Gallery. With L Street Fine Art and the recent opening of Alexander Salazar Fine Art, there are some great places to see contemporary art in Downtown San Diego. And now, the San Diego State University Downtown Gallery will open (at 725 Broadway, in the Electra Building across from Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego) with a reception from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Designed to be an exhibition space for pioneering international artists and designers, the inaugural show, Divergence, will feature the works of three locals (and SDSU alumni): John Baldessari is probably most well known for his text paintings, while Andrea Zittel designs modernist furniture and Deborah Butterfield makes horse sculptures out of found objects.

“Conure” by Deborah Butterfield.

Only In Your Fondest Dreams @ Subtext. See new works from Texas-born graphic designer Brian Flynn, whose work shows his love for illustration and Japanese pop-culture. Live performance by Petticoat.

Urban Moves @ The Golden Hill Youth Center. Jennifer Curry performs with dancers from The California Ballet, members of the Eveoke Dance Theatre, The PGK Project and Somebodies Dance Theater. Pre-show performance by Stella Nova Dance Company. See website for tickets.

Geezer, A Little Big Star, Secret Seven @ Bar Pink. Big Star and Alex Chilton tribute.

Youth Envy, Vampirates @ Soda Bar.

Adam Green, The Dead Trees @ The Casbah. (Early show, 6 p.m.)
