San Diego Shows–Tuesday, April 13

April 13, 2010 - 6:56 am

PLAN A: Holly Golightly and The Broke-Offs, The Creepy Creeps, Green Stamps, DJ Claire @ The Casbah. Golightly’s MySpace page may say she still resides in dreary old England, but she actually moved to, of all places, a farm in rural Georgia last year. Makes sense. Her music has trended more and more toward back-porch-style country lately, and while the Southern accent might be missing, the heartbreak and longing in her voice are perfectly suited for the job. BACKUP PLAN: Monomate, Supersonic, The Silph Scope, Bleeds @ Soda Bar. Christ almighty, how do I describe Santa Monica’s Monomate? A mix of hardcore, emo and electronica complete with old-school video games bleeps providing the backbeat? Cracked-out, Ritalin-deprived punk that could appeal to All Leather and Taking Back Sunday fans alike? Whatevs, it’s just fucking weird. BACKUP PLAN: Christian Scott @ San Diego City College.

Dimestories: Literary Death Match @ The Loft at UCSD. This is the blurb we ran about this event in CityBeat this week (I did not write it): Some here at CityBeat have long wondered who’s the bigger asshole of a critic: CityBeat’s Seth Combs or American Idol’s Simon Cowell. We’ll find out on at Dimestories: Literary Death Match, where Combs will be one of three judges spewing opinions about San Diego’s brightest writers’ three-minute fiction bombs. Of course, Combs isn’t the primary draw: We love words read aloud but can’t abide 85 percent of “spoken-word poetry” and loathe slams. This is spoken prose, and it doesn’t get much better than this. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. $6 in advance, $10 at the door at The Loft, on the second floor of UCSD Price Center East.

David J @ Ducky Waddles Emporium. The former bass player of Bauhaus and main man of Love & Rockets will perform an “enhanced” DJ set with help from his son Joseph as well as Pepe Mogt and Roberto Mendoza (of Nortec Collective).

“Community Party” @ Bar Basic. Celebrate the new mural on 30th & Redwood made possible by the Fiesta Movement and local creative types Holiday Matinee and Sezio. There’ll be pop-up shops from M-Theory, Subtext and Igloo.

Michelle Shocked @ San Diego Civic Theatre. (starts at noon) To commemorate the 5th anniversary of San Diego’s living wage ordinance, singer/songwriter Michelle Shocked shares the stage with local folk-rockers the ZenKeys Cooperative.

“Green is Everyone’s Business” launch party w/ Liquid Blue, Ryan West, Poole St. Boyz @ Belly Up.

Got No Shame, The Getdown, The Bombpops, Being Jared @ Radio Room.

“Too Cool For Karaoke” @ Ruby Room.

Darkwave Garden @ Club Kadan.

“Friends Chill” game night @ Whistle Stop.
