San Diego Shows–Wednesday, April 14

April 14, 2010 - 6:03 am

PLAN A: Arrows, Colour Vision DJs @ Beauty Bar. This “glo-fi” stuff all the kids are crazy about, probably best represented by bedroom projects like Washed Out and Neon Indian, finally has a fantastic local representative with Arrows (above). Melodic and infectious synth-pop that wouldn’t have been out of place in 1983. Their music makes me want to tuck it back and dance around like Buffalo Bill. Will you fuck me? I’d fuck me. PLAN B: Proxy, The Delta Fiasco, Shark Attack, DJ Krassy @ Voyeur: If you go to only one electronic show this week, or even the whole month, make it this one. Any DJ can loop a sample or create a danceable beat, but the Moscow-bred headliner is creating heavy and dark dance music that’s truly innovative and gets the crowd nuts (check out the video below). And listen to his 2009 single “Who Are You?” to get an idea of what I’m talking about. PLAN C: Bill Frisell @ Anthology. Frisell is a veteran guitarist who’s dabbled in everything from folk to jazz, but his more recent foray into instrumental country sounds like the lost score from Unforgiven or the TV series Deadwood. Beautiful, but haunting as hell. BACKUP PLAN: Retribution Gospel Choir, Little White Teeth @ The Casbah.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Office Space @ Pearl Hotel. Looks like someone’s got a case of the Mondays. Er, Wednesdays. Mike Judge’s feature debut is still painfully hilarious.

Justin Froese & Taming the Fox, The Beat Seakers @ Ruby Room.

Anthony Wilson Trio with special guest Gilbert Castellanos @ The Neurosciences Institute.

Cheap Trick @ Belly Up. (sold out)

The Willowz, Maren Parusel @ Bar Pink.

Proxy, The Delta Fiasco @ Voyeur.

Arms Entwined, Hialeah, The Beautiful View @ Soda Bar.

Lilith Velkor, Prize Country, Breaker Breaker One Niner @ Tin Can Ale House.

VNV Nation, Aerodrone @ House of Blues.

DJ Ikah Love @ Whistle Stop.

“Guthrie Family Rides Again” w/Arlo Guthrie, Abe, Cathy, Annie, Sarah Lee Guthrie, Johnny Iron @ California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Janay Poole, Guava Belly, Tori Roze & The Hot Mess @ U-31.
