San Diego Shows–Wednesday, April 21

April 21, 2010 - 7:15 am

Japandroids, Avi Buffalo, Meseta @ The Casbah. Vancouver’s Japandroids had a great ’09 on the strength of their first LP, Post-Nothing, which landed on a ton of year-end best-albums lists (including mine), but their new single, “Art Czars,” finds them heading in a more straight-ahead rock direction than the furious, shoegazey rock of their debut (check out Sammi Skolmoski’s great piece she did this past summer). But it’s the youngsters in Avi Buffalo (above) that have me even more excited. Their upcoming self-titled debut is life-changing, à la The Shins, and they were fantastic at last year’s North Park Music Thing. PLAN B: Monterey Jazz Festival @ Balboa Theatre. Why drive all the way north? This touring company of jazz all-stars and MJF vets includes Grammy-winning vocalist Kurt Elling and guitarist Russell Malone, who’s played with everyone from Harry Connick Jr. to Diana Krall. BACKUP PLAN: Nena Anderson Jazz Trio @ Bar Pink.

OTHER COOL STUFF:

Tatjana Soli @ The Book Works. Soli used to visit The Book Works (2670 Via de la Valle in Del Mar) and dream about one day writing her own novel and having a signing there. Now she’s done it with The Lotus Eaters, a historical novel set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and told from the perspective of a female combat photographer. The Pushcart Award-nominated author will be at the bookstore at 7 p.m. to sign copies and lead a discussion on the themes in her debut novel: war, obsession and love.

Kartik Seshadri @ Conrad Prebys Music Hall.

The Growlers, Space Nature, Mr. Gnome, Heavy Glow, Longstay @ Beauty Bar.

Normandie Wilson, Adams and Eves, Erika Davies @ Tin Can Ale House.

Pat Metheny @ Spreckels Theatre.

Platypus Egg, Tore Back, Illintention @ Soda Bar.

Overkill, Vader, God Dethroned, Warbringer, Evile, Woe of Tyrants @ House of Blues.

Veronica May & The To Do List, Lindsay White, Coles Whalen, Rhythm and the Method @ U-31.

Gilbert Castellanos @ Super El Camino.

Marcy Playground, Faking Genius, Monday’s Alibi, Universal Trap @ Brick by Brick.

Victoria Vox, Peter Bolland @ Dizzy’s at the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center. CD Release show for Vox’s album Exact Change.

John Brown’s Body, Toubab Krewe, Stick Figure @ Belly Up.
