San Diego Shows–Thursday, July 1

July 1, 2010 - 6:00 am

PLAN A: Dead Meadow, Gun Runner, Brainticket DJs, Strange Vine @ The Casbah. With their mythical outlook and wah-wah guitars, Dead Meadow offer up deliciously haze-y stoner rock. Locals Gun Runner don’t sound like stoners, but their pop-rock sounds great live. PLAN B: CocoRosie, Cibelle @ Belly Up. CocoRosie’s electronic artpop can be utterly sublime or disappointingly uneven. If you’re looking for something more reliable, consider… PLAN C: Neat Beats, La Forge @ Tin Can Ale House. Local dude Neat Beats gets remarkably funky with his Flying Lotus-style beats. BACKUP PLAN: DJ Kool Won, 2D’s, Bookie, SMF, Bird, Fat Boy Music, Big Maine, Big Grizz, Fella Pi, B Star, Boom Box Renaissance @ Dream Street.

Hillcrest Art Nite @ University Ave. btwn 10th Ave. & Normal St. Those who have fond memories of the monthly Hillcrest Art Nite events from the last two years, rejoice. Art Nite is returning for a special block party and lighting celebration on Thursday, July 1, along University Avenue between 10th Avenue and Normal Street. Beginning at 6 p.m., you can explore art displays and sidewalk sales while enjoying live entertainment and various neighborhood eats. Seating will be provided for the weary. At 8:30 p.m., stroll over to the east end of Hillcrest where San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria will flip the switch to more than 50 color-changing median lights in the neighborhood, transforming University Avenue into a dazzling light

Connoisseur Cinema @ Studio Diner. Sick of the summer movies already? We don’t blame you. Try out the new Connoisseur Cinema series, then, which begins Thursday, July 1, with M*A*S*H* and runs every Thursday in July and August at the Studio Diner in Kearny Mesa (4701 Ruffin Road). Titles include classics like Five Easy Pieces and Melvin and Howard, and each screening is followed by a discussion led by either Scott Marks of KPBS’s “Film Club of the Air,” longtime San Diego film writer David Elliott or Cinema Society honcho Andy Friedenberg. Showtime is 7:45 p.m. The diner is also offering a discount on bottles of wine made by Francis Ford Coppola. Tickets are $15 apiece, or you can subscribe to four different films for $50. See for a complete schedule and more details.
