San Diego Shows–Friday, July 1
PLAN A: Dum Dum Girls, Crocodiles, Magic Bullets, Soft Healer, DJ Mario Orduno @ The Casbah. A wise hipster wouldn’t dare miss this display of local indie-rock royalty. If you read Pitchfork, you probably already know about Dum Dum Girls’ infectious garage-rock and Crocodiles’ skuzzy electro-rock. If not, well, you probably aren’t a hipster. PLAN B: The Hot Moon, Mammoth Life, The Flying Objects DJ set @ Soda Bar. The ghost of the defunct indie-rock trio Grand Ole Party is alive tonight. While GOP’s Kristin Gundred now leads Dum Dum Girls, another GOP vet—multiinstrumentalist John Paul Labno—plays in the soulful group The Hot Moon. (See our feature here.) PLAN C: The Minibosses, The Finches, The Paddle Boat, Logan Greene & the Bricks @ Che Café. The Minibosses turn video-game music into gnarly prog-metal, which is way cooler than it sounds. BACKUP PLAN: The Old In Out, The Death Eaters, Guantanamo Baywatch, Kuntz @ Tower Bar.
Son of Enrique…Experienced: Attack of the Art! @ JETT Gallery. When we originally told you about our irreverent columnist Enrique Limón’s art show, Enrique…Experienced, back in May, we thought that was the one and only chance to have, well, an Enrique experience. Fortunately for you, we were wrong. Behold Son of Enrique…Experienced: Attack of the Art! where you can see the 12 pieces that were at the first show, plus three new works by James Ivey, Exist 1981 and Nick McPherson, all of which are based on past “The Enrique Experience” columns, which can be found on our “Nightgeist” page each week. To round out the evening—6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 2, at JETT Gallery (989 W. Kalmia St. in Little Italy)—there’ll be a special live performance by musician Bill Wesley and beats from DJs Astronauta Jackson, Machino and more. Arrive before 7 p.m. and score some free wine. Search for the event page on Facebook.
Botanica Magnifica @ Sorrento Valley gallery. We’ve been intrigued with what Symbolic Collection’s got going on. The spacious Sorrento Valley gallery (11425 Sorrento Valley Road) opened only a few months ago but has since rolled out some cool exhibitions during its monthly “First Fridays” events. From 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 2, Symbolic presents Jonathan Singer’s Botanica Magnifica. Singer’s work is featured in the Smithsonian, and he’s been honored worldwide for his largescale botanical photography. We’re not just talking macro shots of pretty posies; we’re talking about a guy who turns flowers into objects of sublime, sometimes otherworldly beauty, made all the more stunning by the size of the prints. The evening includes catering by Ruth’s Chris Steak House and drinks from Montesquieu Winery. Entry is free, but RSVP is requested to firstname.lastname@example.org or 858-259-4411.
