San Diego “Intactivist” publishes anti-circumcision comic book

July 19, 2010 - 1:49 pm

For several years, local anti-circumcision activist (or “Intactivist”) Matthew Hess has used a character he created, “Foreskin Man,” to promote a piece of legislation that would ban the circumcision of newborn boys .  At conferences and media events, Hess has handed out posters featuring the character and his sidekick “Intactibabe,” who use tools like the “Gomco clamp vaporizer” and “OB/GYN  neutralizer” to combat the villainous Dr Mutilator and Monster Mohel.

For Comic-Con, Hess has taken his vision a step further and is now promoting his Male Genital Mutilation Bill with a full, 12-page comic book drawn by Brazilian artist Gledson Barreto. It’s a bit heavy-handed, but, err….well, we are talking about procedure that involves a scalpel and a pee-pee. (Read our cover story on the operation from January.)

You can download the pdf of Foreskin Man #1 here or view it panel by panel online here.  Hess also has print editions; we’ll update when he emails us back about its availability.

We wrote in depth about the local debate over circumcision back in January.

I’m speechless, Dave. You’ve stumped me. *pun intended*

To adults, the images may be a bit over-the-top. But, considing that in the United States infants are being circumcised, the images most likely reflect their perception of being cut. I was circumcised when I was born. I have been told that I screamed quite a bit when the montster–err–doctor cut me without anesthesia.

I think the comic is valuable for raising awareness of infant circumcision. The more we know about circumcision, the more that people question why we still do it.

I’ll save the tallywhacker jokes. I too am circumcised. I don’t remember it, don’t think it affected me and have no opinion on circumcision. It is what it is. It’s a religious thing. I don’t believe in stifling religion even though I’m not a practicer of any religion.

My parents are Catholic, and the Catholic Church does not endorse circumcision for religious reasons. Most boys in the US are not cut for religious reasons.

I was in my mid 40s when I realized that sex was not like it used to be. By the time I was in my 50s I had very little enjoyment from sex with my partner, although masturbation was just as pleasurable as always. I was 52 when I discovered foreskin restoration. After restoring my foreskin, my sexual pleasure returned. I regained the sensitivity I lost from all those years of having my glans exposed to rubbing against my clothes. I also was able to enjoy the gliding motion from my restored foreskin. WOW! Sex today with my restored foreskin is better than I ever remember it being before. My wife enjoys it, also.

If you are circumcised and happy with it, great. But, a growing number of men are realizing that they miss the erogenous tissue removed by circumcision. The greater the awareness that infant circumcision does not serve any purpose in today’s world, the sooner the obsolete practice will stop.

To be honest, Tally, I never gave my being circumcised any real thought. I also didn’t know that Catholics are against it. My parents and I were all baptised Catholic and I’m circumcised. I know the Jews are big on circumcision. Like I said before, I never really gave the issue any thought until this blog showed up. Not sure if my son is circumcised or not since I gave him up for adoption well over a decade ago. Thanks for the info though.

Glad to help. Raising awareness is the objective of the Foreskin Man comic and Dave’s blog.

I’ll do some research in the next few days as time permits.

Hey there… happened upon this site when doing some research on circumcision.

I just thought I would let everyone know that the Catholic Church is not “against” circumcision, nor does it have any official position on circumcision. Someone here must have been misinformed. If you need a reason to believe me, for what it’s worth, I have a masters degree in theology from a pontifical university and am a Catholic school teacher.

No, but… “Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intended amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral law.”

Circumcision is non-therapeutic according to all the medical organizations in the world. And it’s an amputation.

I think the point he was making is that it’s not required for the Catholic religion, such as Jews believe it is required for theirs.

What is wrong with people that this becomes an issue in someone’s life that they feel their issues should take precedence over more important issues. Get over it. Your lack of feeling is nothing compared to what is happening with our financial system and you need to add more legislation nightmares. Go back got the cave in which you crawled out from and let people do what they want. Religion is dying off as people are more aware of it’s brainwashing tactics to make people pure. Take some drugs and get a life. I just can’t believe how so many people are hung up on their issues and want everyone else in this world to know their problems. You want attention, do something good for a change and cure a disease or solve the financial crisis. Don’t cause more hangups in our judicial or governement system over your lack of feeling during sex. More people should stand up to your type and shut you up.
