The voice behind Cleveland Jr. on The Cleveland Show

Kevin Michael Richardson is the high-pitched voice behind the chubby-but-cute Cleveland Jr. on The Cleveland Show, the new Family Guy spin-off.

Richardson was in town for Comic-Con weekend and he sat down with CityBeat to answer a few questions about the show, which kicks off its second season in September.

The first question I had for Richardson was this: Why the hell did creator Seth MacFarlane decide to do a spin-off show based on a character who played such a minor role in Family Guy? Why not the notorious, quotable pervert, Quagmire?

“To quote Seth,” said Richardson, “we really couldn’t do a show about a rapist.”

The Cleveland Show, explained Richardson, was a good choice because good-old Cleveland is a kind-hearted, soft-spoken man who also happens to have a hilarious family—Cleveland Jr. being the funniest piece of that familial pie.

Why don’t I shut up and let Richardson do the rest of the talking? He is, after all, a professional voice actor so you can expect a little singing, a little Obama and an appearance by Lester Krinklesac and Cleveland Jr. himself in this little audio piece:

Kevin Michael Richardson is so awesome. And his Joker is all his own. Richardson is a lot more all over the place, one minute he has a gravelly voice, next you know it’s all shrill. Hamill’s better at laughs than voice change.
