Seth Combs set to lose his beard, get his hair cut like Justin Bieber

September 7, 2010 - 12:32 pm

Last month, Seth Combs, editor of Pacific San Diego Magazine and former CityBeat arts and culture editor, agreed to a peculiar bet while getting drunk with some colleagues at The Casbah: If Bonnie Vandewater, a local book editor, could raise $300 for the San Diego Humane Society, Combs would get his hair cut like Justin Bieber. And if she could raise $700, he would cut off his famous beard.

In the weeks since, pledges poured in. She even got a “clincher” pledge from somebody who promised to donate all of the unmet funds, she told me. As of today, she’s got enough money in hand for the beard to go off. “We raised over $700 and more pledges seem to be coming in,” she says in a Facebook message.

Combs’ haircut appointment–where he’ll be turned into a “babyfaced Justin Bieber lookalike,” as Vandewater put it this morning in a Facebook invitation–is scheduled for this Wednesday, Sept. 8, at U-31 during Hipster (un)Happy Hour from 5-9 p.m. There’ll be cheap drinks and fish tacos; giveaways of tickets to upcoming shows at the Belly Up; and performances by Long Live Logs, Gregory Page, and Rob Deez and Josh Damigo.

No doubt, Deez and Damigo will take this opportunity to sing “Seth Combs,” a coffee-shop diss rap written in response to Combs’ acidic critique of the album that won Damigo “Best Local Recording” at the San Diego Music Awards last year.

In a brief e-mail interview a few weeks back, Combs didn’t chafe at the thought of getting “The Bieb” and losing his beard. He said he didn’t care how he thinks the new ‘do would go with the ladies, adding: “I’d like to think that when I tell them I did it for cute, fuzzy animals it’ll make up for the fact that I look like a lesbian version of Ringo Starr, but who knows?”

Cool, I’m tired of that copycat trying to duplicate MY look, heh heh! Last haircut I had was 1979, and my beard has taken on such a life of its own that I almost declared it as a roommate in the last census…

BTW, really enjoying Kinsee’s increasingly comprehensive coverage of the local arts scene – lots of impressive upgrades going on over there at CB!

And a tip o’ the hat to Bonnie and Seth – great idea, great cause, and some terrific bands!
