Cannabis collective Christmas giving

December 7, 2010 - 4:10 pm

Steve Breen's collective member

Any time I see a political cartoon caricaturing cannabis collectives  I have to resist ranting. Medical marijuana patients run the gamut, from tie-and-loafers  businessman to wheelchair-bound granny. Sure, there are styles that are popular in cannabis culture, but  it isn’t ponytails and sandals anymore. It’s certainly not headbands and Lennon glasses. It’s backwards caps, baggy jeans, tattoos and tripped out beards. To put it another way, it’s more Cypress Hill than Grateful Dead and has been for quite some time. Perhaps too long.

The crew at the Green Door Collective in Normal Heights live up to contemporary style, sure, but unlike most collectives, Green Door doesn’t advertise (at least not in CityBeat) and isn’t currently accepting new members. Here’s where Steve Breen can really shove conservative stereotypes up his nose: Green Door members participated in a toy drive and collected enough gifts to fill a van.

And whose toy drive did they work through? The US mothereffin’ Marine Corps. There’s nothing like Marines in full dress standing next to a (fake) pot leaf Christmas tree for breaking stereotypes.

I know Santa’s got Green Door on his nice list. Wish I could say the same for the District Attorney’s office.  (Until she sees the light, check out this spoof Letter to Santa from Bonnie Dumanis we wrote last year.)
